Reverse Engineering of a Drafting Compass

Dietzgen Drafting Compass

Project Description: In this reverse engineering project, Zach DeGroote and Allen Ashley disassembled, modeled, and recorded dimensions and mass properties of a Dietzgen drafting compass.

Product Description: Produced by Dietzgen in Germany, this compass is used by people who work in fields such as architecture.  It works by utilizing two adjustable arms, one with a point that keeps the compass from moving, and another arm that uses pencil lead to draw arcs and circles.  The radius can be adjusted using a wheel and axle system in between the arms.  It has a handle to make it easy to grip, a bow to add support, and other wheels to adjust the length of the left arm and for tightening the pencil lead.
